Students believe the British university diploma increases their chances on the labour market
More than half of Polish high school graduates and students believe that a degree from one of British universities gives them the best chance on the labour market, according to a survey of the Institute Homo Homini commissioned by the Polish Open University (POU).
German and Polish universities had next places in the survey.
The study was conducted in the form of a telephone survey on a group of 1,100 respondents in July this year.
"The
British higher education system enjoys a reputation of one of the most
elite in the world. British universities uniquely combine academic
knowledge with practical skills, necessary in future careers" -
emphasised the Polish Open University Rector Dr. Zuzanna Kalisiak.
What
else determines the high prestige of the British universities?
According to the POU experts, British universities have a rich
historical tradition, perfectly developed system of education centred on
student and, of course, modern equipment. Famous graduates attract
students from around the world. Many students build their business
relationships based on network of acquaintances from the university.
Second
place in the survey with a score of nearly 15 percent had German
universities. "German companies are our most important business partner.
Many Poles work in Germany, and the recently opened labour market
increases this cooperation. German universities, such as the Humboldt
University in Berlin and the University of Heidelberg, enjoy a high
reputation worldwide" - believe the POU experts.
The survey shows
that only 13 percent respondents would prefer to obtain their diplomas
in Poland. "The vast majority of respondents would choose to study
abroad, which may be a sign for Polish universities, that they should
internationalise their programs as soon as possible” - reads the
commentary to the study.
Next on the list of countries, whose
diploma gives best chances on the labour market, were French
universities (8 percent respondents) and universities in the United
States (5 percent).
The Institute of Homo Homini study shows that
the foreign degree has more value for women. As many as 55 percent
female students (compared with 42 percent male students) believe that a
degree from a British university increases the chances on the labour
market. Also, slightly more women than men would choose a French or
German diploma over Polish.
Polish university diploma is
sufficient for finding a job after graduation for 22 percent men and
only 9 percent women. 9 percent surveyed men are interested in an
American diploma. Female students, who believe that the most valuable on
the labour market is a degree from overseas universities, represent
only 3 percent respondents. (PAP)
