Polish people are undemanding in sex
Poles are satisfied with their sex lives, but only because they have low expectations in this area - said experts at the international congress "Men and women - reproductive and sexual health", which took place in Warsaw.
Prof. Zbigniew Lew-Starowicz said that Poles have a long tradition of
open approach to sex, which the nobility exhibited. Sarmatism upheld
traditional roles of men and women, but was also liberal, encouraged
sexual activity, and gave women the right to sexual satisfaction.
"In
later times in the Polish society, however, middle-class tradition
prevailed, with distrust toward sex, prudery and poor art of love" -
said Lew-Starowicz. In his view, middle-class attitude to sex eventually
prevailed after World War II, when the aristocratic culture was finally
destroyed.
According to the Polish sexologist, Poles today are
reluctant to talk with doctors about their problems in sexual life. They
often expect problems to solve themselves, and even if this does not
happen, they believe that no one will be able to help them. Meanwhile,
there are more and more sexual dysfunctions. Every third man suffers
from premature ejaculation, and one in ten has erectile dysfunction
problems. 47 percent Poles declare that they are always able to have
sex.
"Sexual dysfunctions also affect Polish women" - added
Lew-Starowicz. 27 percent of them have sex several times a week, but 14
percent do not have any sexual needs, and 12 percent feel pain during
intercourse. "Polish women rarely fake orgasm, but only 8 percent do not
experience it at all, while 30 per cent have less sexual needs. 8
percent women have higher than average sex drive" - he said.
According
Lew-Starowicz, the population of north-western regions of the country
is more satisfied with their sex lives. "Overall, however, in matters of
sex we are little demanding" - he stressed.
Experts also
discussed the sexual behaviour in Central and Eastern Europe. Prof. Petr
Weiss from the Institute of Sexology, Charles University in Prague,
said that the Czechs are very tolerant towards sexual minorities, and
grant women the right to decide on abortion. He denied the fairly common
belief that the Czechs are sexually promiscuous.
"The average
Czech adolescent has first sexual experience at the age of 18, similarly
as in many other countries. In this respect, nothing has changed since
1993, when such survey has been carried out for the first time after the
system transformation" - said Weiss.
He added that the Czechs
still have the same number of sexual partners as in the past: while in
1993 the men declared that they had sex with 10 women, they now admit
that they had nine sexual partners. Czech women in 1993 had an average
of five partners, and since then, at least in the surveys, nothing has
changed.
"Still, many women in the Czech Republic fake orgasm" -
said Weiss. Only 27 percent claim that they have never done that. One in
four Czech women admits, however, that she often simulates the climax,
and 48 percent admit to doing it from time to time.
He added that
the Czech Republic confirms the general observation that the more women
use oral contraceptives, the less abortions are preformed.
During
the meeting participant pointed out the worrying fact that more and
more people suffer from lifestyle diseases such as heart failure,
diabetes and depression, which cause loss of interest in sex.
"The
best example is the erectile dysfunction in men, which may be the first
sign of atherosclerosis," - said Prof. Artur Mamcarz, head of the
Department of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Solec Hospital in
Warsaw. He warned that in men this may lead to heart attack or stroke in
several years. (PAP)
