Eating Healthy At College

If you have chosen to live at the dorms while attending College, you may have heard of the term Freshman 15. This term is used by College students who in their freshman year have gained 15 pounds. You can avoid this by making sure that you don’t allow yourself to fall into the trap. The good thing about living on campus is that you have to walk everywhere. Since you are already here, there is no need for a car to get around school. A great way to lose weight or to stay healthy at school is to walk. If there are elevators located in some of your buildings, opt for the stairs. Walk to classes and if you can take the long way around.

Every College has a track, try walking or jogging around the track every other day to get some exercise in. There are some Colleges that offer weight rooms and gyms for their students. Take advantage of that, but along with exercise to keep off the Freshman 15 is to eat right. Some students eat a lot of junk food their first year or so. It is faster and easy but it isn’t healthy. Many dorm students keep bags of candy or frozen dinners in their rooms. These will help add to the freshman 15. Keep healthy snacks like popcorn, diet soda or water and limit yourself to the amount of chocolate or frozen foods you eat.

Every student living in the dorms eat in the cafeteria. Choose your meals carefully. Mostly college campuses offer a great variety of foods, you should be eating three meals a day. For breakfast stay away from cakes, pastries and donuts. Take the time to eat everyday, you know the saying, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you are on the go and working hard in school, eating breakfast can help give you a boost of much needed energy in the morning.

Keep a power bar with you during the day; this will help you if you start to lag during the day. Avoid eating late a night; this can actually cause you to gain weight, too. There are plenty of ways to eat healthy when you are away at school but often students don’t make the effort to try to eat right. Then before they know it they have gained weight and in the same environment may be hard to lose it. The first few weeks of adjusting to College may affect your eating habits but once you have settled in and formed a routine, it won’t be as hard.

You have to take the time to exercise and practice eating right. You may gain a few pounds in the process but once you have got your rhythm you can start to find that perfect balance of working hard, eating right and staying healthy. Talk to some of your roommates and see if they are interested in working out with you. Sometimes when you can’t always eat right at least you can get in a great workout.
