Polish branch of L'Oréal
has been awarding researchers for 10 years. Each year the program
selects young talents, whose example is to encourage next generations to
undertake research. Maria Majdrowicz, Director of Corporate
Communications L'Oreal Polska pointed out that the laureates take great
research challenges in the fields including medicine, biotechnology,
biology. "Through its program, L'Oréal would like to express
appreciation for their achievements and encourage them to continue to
work towards the development of science" - said Maria Majdrowicz.
To
date, fifty women researchers have received the awards. They conduct
research in Białystok, Gdańsk, Gliwice, Katowice, Lublin, Łódź, Poznań,
Szczecin, Toruń, Warsaw and Wrocław.
The condition for
participating in the competition, for both PhD students (age limit 35
years) and postdoctoral students (age limit 45 years), is being at the
final stage of research work. Nominations are evaluated by the jury of
eleven. It is composed of Polish academic life authorities.
"The
awards of L'Oréal Polska for Women in Science with support from the
Polish Committee for UNESCO are a local initiative. The source of
inspiration was the agreement signed in Paris between the Group of
L'Oréal and UNESCO +For Women in Science+. Under the agreement, each
year in Paris UNESCO headquarters, outstanding young women scientists
and PhD students from five continents receive financial awards and
fellowships" - said Maria Majdrowicz.
Over 12 years the prizes
were awarded to 67 outstanding women researchers from 30 countries and
165 young women from 81 countries received international fellowships.
Local Polish program has become a model for other countries. Currently
it is conducted by tens of L'Oréal branches. (PAP)
