Conference offers fresh insight into European biogas industry

Biogas is increasingly seen as a versatile and vital renewable energy source, thanks to its role in supporting energy security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Produced from organic waste, biogas can be used to generate electricity and heat, or used as vehicle fuel. It can be upgraded to biomethane to be fed into the national gas grid. The production and utilisation of biogas technologies is not yet equally established across the EU, with several countries relying on public support schemes to facilitate their large-scale deployment. However, the potential of biogas for reaching climate and energy goals is widely recognised.

On 20-21 November, a conference focusing on commercial strategies for the future of biogas and renewable energy integration will be held in Copenhagen. Called Power ON Gas 2019, the event will bring together experts from biogas and P2G industries. It will include a wide display of anaerobic digestion processes that involve the conversion of organic material into biogas. Filled with presentations from industry end users, the conference will cover various case studies and successful partnerships in the field, as well as new P2G technologies.

What are the key topics?

A session on the European biogas market outlook, which will also look at the global context, will analyse the uncertainties and opportunities in the sector, as well as regional policies and the regulatory framework. The potential of biomethane as a fuel is one of the themes to be covered during conference presentations, while another session will provide an overview of public and private financing tools and sources for biogas and P2G projects.

One of the case studies that will enter the spotlight is the Solrød Biogas A/S facility that has been co-funded by the EU’s Intelligent Energy Europe programme. A day prior to the main event, a limited number of conference participants will be offered the opportunity to visit the Solrød site that produces green energy from seaweed. A news release summarising the conference agenda states: “When operating, the plant is capable of producing heating for approximately 1,700 households and electricity for 3,800 households. The Solrød biogas plant is assisting the municipality to fulfil its goal of cutting its CO2 emissions in half by 2025.”
