Cranial Fragments found by Sapienza researchers

Italian-Eritrean researchers, led by Alfredo Coppa from the Sapienza Department of Environmental Science, uncovered 1 million years old Homo Sapiens fossils at the Muhuli Amo site in the Danakil region of Eritrea

These finds are compatible with some cranial fragments found in previous missions. One of them, in particular, is important because it completes the rest of a cranial vault. Moreover, it refers to another skull, known as UA31, discovered at the Uadi Aalad site, just a few kilometres away. It appears to represent an entire group of people instead of a single person. The area also has enormous potential for researches to discover the origin of our species.

The missions were financed by Sapienza through an international project “Eritrean-Italian Danakil Expedition: Anthropo-archaeological and Geo-Paleontological Mission”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Scientific Research. Other researchers contributed, including groups from the University of Rome and other universities throughout Italy and Spain, the Regional Museum of Massawa,  the Eritrean National Museum of Asmara, the Pigorini Museum of Rome and the National Museum of Natural History of Paris.
